It seems as though an American holiday originally created to celebrate a glorious revolution ends up being a holiday where a bunch of Republicans give me weird looks after I throw my fist in the air and shout “Viva la Revolucion!!” at top volume while they listened intently to their speaker. Of course, the weird looks caused me to laugh like a crazy person, and then yell/sing about a nearby port-a-potty. Ahh, good times. Goooood times. Sadly, I have been forced to spend the flag wavin’ holiday with my family, who came very close to forcing me to wear something patriotic. Eerugh. Luckily, I have been spared so far. I personally think that the original founding fathers would have been proud that Comrade Dingo didn’t join in the repetitive chanting of “USA! USA!” (which is much like the chanting of “Four legs good, two legs bad!” in Animal Farm), because they themselves were revolutionaries. In fact, Jefferson said something to the effect of that it is the peoples’ duty to rebel if the government becomes tyrannous, which of course it has. Yes, Obama is a cool guy, but there is still corruption and still so much that needs to change. We shouldn’t be celebrating what currently stands, but the changes that could occur. We can’t have our eyes covered by a red white and blue airline blindfold while the plane falls out of the sky, but instead let it fall out the door while you give the pilot the Heimlich. This doesn’t just go for America, but for any country. Don’t turn your patriotism into nationalism, as the US did. We need to put the kibosh on the whole: “If you don’t like the USA, get out!” mentality. So, the fact that I would rather carry a red flagĀ and American flag is, in a mixed up way more patriotic than plastering the latter anywhere I can. But it still isn’t. Huh? I might be making sense here…
Anyway, if you support the US currently, then by all means, be patriotic. But if you don’t, then yell controversial statements and write a blog that barely anybody will read (much to your dismay). And, no matter what, don’t let patriotism get in the way for a need for change. Even if it is the future and you are living under communism and it is a really, really cool picture of Trotsky slaying the capitalist snakedragonthing (picture below).
